A new beginning
April 18, 2009
The OTH spring soccer season got off to a wet start today with Ames Breeze playing about 75% of their game in the rain. The Hurricanes got a bit luckier as the rain stopped before their game began and the sun actually came out for a while.
Breeze lost 5-2 to Johnston in the 1st Division. Johnston went 1-0 up in the first quarter with a well taken shot on goal that left Frank Montabon with no chance. Anthony Van Broekhuizen leveled it up again 15 minutes later with another nicely placed shot on target.
Johnston took the lead again early in the second half after a shot from Mark Kacer slipped in past Frank. Johnston made it 3-1 just two minutes later when a Johnston midfielder picked up a clearance and hammered home a nice 25 yard shot which Frank might have saved if it hadn't been for stepping in the foot deep hole in front of the goals.
Anthony Van Broekhuizen brought it back to 3-2 when Kelli Kopf send a nice pass forward into the penalty area, Anthony beat the Johnston GK with a well placed shot into the bottom left corner. Breeze were back in the game and putting together some good attacks on the Johnston goal but unfortunately none resulted in further goals. Mark Carran, Matt White, Mike Dunbar, Kelsey Carvell Ashley Lockwood all had good chances but failed to convert them.
Johnston was awarded a PK ten minutes before the end of the game after Frank took advantage of a young girl in the penalty area. They scored from that and followed up with another goal just a few minutes later.
The score did not justify the effort and great play that the Breeze produced. There were a lot of great moves and skillful passing.
Two yellow cards were handed out, the first to Mark Kilian and second to Yuri Svec(tacular). I would have to say that neither were really deserved.
A big thanks to Dustin Gray for captaining and taking great control of the game. A big thanks also to Eric McCoy and Frank Montabon for playing for the Breeze as guest players to keep the numbers up.
Breeze are looking forward to next weeks game against Recipe on a smoother field.
Hurricanes' opening game of the 3rd Division was against their old rivals Carlisle Pride and they won decisively 6-0. The first goal came from Kelli Kopf seven minutes into the first half. A nicely placed pass from Iacovos Zachariades left her with just the goalkeeper to beat and she slipped the ball into the bottom corner.
Hurricanes had to wait another twenty five minutes to see their second goal however the crowd were kept amused by some spectacular diving in the penalty area as Iacovos and Lars went into fierce competition for this years Geronimo Award. This left everyone impressed apart from the referee.
Eric McCoy started the play pushing the ball forward to Kopf who in turn sent it thru to Hybel. He powered a shot into the bottom corner leaving the Carlisle GK with no chance.
Carlisle fought back with a few good moves but lacked finishing and there wasn't much to challenge a slightly bored Doug Jacobson it the Hurricane's goal.
The score remained at 2-0 until after halftime when the team retired to the sidelines for freshly cut oranges only to find that there weren't any.
The second half saw Hurricanes pushing forward again. Kopf made it 3-0 when she converted a corner kick sent in by Kenny Kyle. Graham Vincent should have made it 4-0 a few minutes later when a cross from Eileen Flaherty left him open in front of an open goal however his shot went over the crossbar.
Lars Hybel got his second and Hurricanes' 4th when a pass from Flaherty found him in front of the Carlisle goal.
Crystal Gotro made it 5-0 with a penalty kick that was nicely placed in the left side of the net and Zachariades got the 6th and final goal with a superb shot into the bottom left corner following a perfect cross from Amy Welch.
No yellow cards for the Hurricanes although a few Oscars were handed out.
A big thanks to Rafael Geronimo, Whitney Meyer, Kelli Kopf, Ashley Lockwood and Anthony Van Broekhuizen for appearing as guest players for the Hurricanes.
The Hurricanes are also looking forward to next Saturday and their game against Des Moines Metros also on a smoother field.
