Victory for the Hurricanes over Strikers at McCombe
May 02, 2009
Saturday May 2nd saw victory for the Hurricanes over Strikers at McCombe.
The scoring was opened after 12 minutes when Graham Vincent won the ball out on the right side, demonstrated his fine English footwork dribbling around several defenders and deftly crossing to the big Dutchman Albert van Geelen who found the left corner of the goal waiting for a visit and guided his volley in that direction. 1-0 Hurricanes.
Vincent was the center of entertainment 10 minutes later when his back-heel pass (patented by Kenny Kyle) almost found Amy Welch and the crowd erupted in applause however the ball rolled past her into touch.
Just before half-time, Irish midfielder Eileen Flaherty lined up to take a corner kick meanwhile Rafael Geronimo stood like a sentinel in the center waiting for the ball. Unfortunately his oversized head couldn't find the right direction and the ball went past harmlessly.
Carlos Cortez almost scored, he got into a tangle with the Strikers GK Paul May but his shot went just past the post.
Richard Mull's far-sightedness presented a problem when Striker's midfielder Tim McCentee fired off a powerful shot. Fortunately for the Hurricanes Mull's lack of depth perception was assisted by his feet being in the right place at the right time as he fell to the ground and managed to save it.
Kelli Kopf went roaring into the penalty area early in the second half but her shot was saved by Paul May. She followed up in 3 minutes later with a semi-bicycle kick much to the entertainment of the crowd but it failed to reach the target.
Welch and Vincent hooked up with Mike Dunbar for the next assault on the Striker's goal but Dunbar's shot was saved yet again by May in the Striker's goal.
Matt O'Neal pitched a ball over to Dunbar with ten minutes left to play but his shot went wide. Flaherty sent in another corner to the head of O'Neal but he was wearing a similar hat to Geronimo and the header went hopelessly wide. Welch had a great cross to Eric McCoy who shot – close but no cigar!
In the last minute Kenny Kyle made a noble attempt with a low shot but it went wide.
The game ended 1-0 as Hurricanes fizzled out to the sound of the final whistle.
