Lars Hybel Testimonial Weekend 2017

August 26, 2017 saw the arrival of Palatine Celtics in Ames for the annual Lars Hybel Testimonial Weekend

Last year Ames Hurricanes traveled to Palatine and played games against the Celtics and True Value. This year the event was hosted in Ames and started with a social event Friday August 25th at The Mucky Duck Pub.

There was a ceremonial kickoff at 10am Saturday morning following a moment of silence to remember Lars. Three games were played between on the Saturday and one game on the Sunday before the teams retired to Jethro's for some chocolate cake.  Ames Hurricanes Over 46 Team, Palatine Celtics Over 48 Team and Dina Dulaney's All Girls Team took part in what was a fun-filled weekend that Lars would have loved to have been playing in..

Our thanks goes out to Gary Eyles and to Ames Soccer Club for hosting the event and to three great restaurants in Ames, The Mucky Duck Pub (one of Ames Hurricanes' sponsors), The Iowa Stater, and Jethro's for keeping us in food for the weekend.

A big thanks to Dina Dulaney for organizing the girls team and to Larry for organizing the Celtics team.

Lars spent many years at Ames Hurricanes before moving to Palatine Celtics just before he passed away suddenly on the soccer field, playing his favorite sport, the beautiful game of soccer.

Apart from many other great things that he did, Lars will always be remembered for coining the phrase "These guys are terrible" which the Hurricanes adopted as their motto in 2008.

Lars passed away September 27th 2015. The pallbearers at his funeral were team mates from both Palatine Celtics and Ames Hurricanes.
